　　人文社會科學前瞻研究中心繼2021年之【人文前沿國際大師】系列講座之後，2022年持續以人文前沿為主題，安排一系列的講座。第一場我們邀請到澳洲雪梨大學性別與文化研究/雪梨環境研究所Thom van Dooren教授演講，主題為Stories from the Snail Ark: Hope in a Time of Loss。

在環境變遷與物種滅絕的議題探討中，蝸牛是其中最容易被忽視的動物之一，為了關注此一議題，Dooren教授投入數年的時間進行田野調查。歡迎有興趣的聽眾，一同參與本次的演講，聆聽學者是如何以環境人文的眼光看待物種問題。

主講人簡介


Dr. Simon C. Estok currently holds the award of Foreign Expert of the Double First Class Discipline Cluster (2018-2021) at Sichuan University and is a full professor and Senior Research Fellow at Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea’s first and oldest university). He teaches literary theory, ecocriticism, and Shakespearean literature. His award-winning book Ecocriticism and Shakespeare: Reading Ecophobia appeared in 2011 (reprinted 2014), and he is co-editor of three books: Landscape, Seascape, and the Eco-Spatial Imagination (Routledge, 2016), International Perspectives in Feminist Ecocriticism (Routledge, 2013), and East Asian Ecocriticisms (Macmillan, 2013). His latest book is the much anticipated The Ecophobia Hypothesis (Routledge, 2018). Dr. Estok has published extensively on ecocriticism and Shakespeare in such journals as PMLA, Mosaic, Configurations, English Studies in Canada, and others.



主持人簡介


Dr. Chia-ju Chang is a professor in Modern Languages and Literatures at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. Her research broadly falls under what is now called “environmental humanities” with a strong commitment to Chinese critical animal studies, ecocriticism and ecocinema studies. Her first book in Chinese, Global Imagination of Ecological Communities: Chinese and Western Ecocritical Praxis (Jiangsu University Press, 2013), won the 2013 Bureau of Jiangsu Province Journalism and Publication award in China. She and Scott Slovic co-edited a volume Ecocriticism in Taiwan: Identity, Environment, and the Arts (Lexington, 2016). She is also the guest editor for Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series, No 41: Special Issue on “Animal Writing: Taiwan’s Dongwu Shuxie.” Her latest publications include two edited works, Chinese Environmental Humanities: Practices at the Margins (Palgrave, 2019) and Readings on the Heart of Animals (NCHU, 2019). Chang has served as an executive council of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE).

主講人簡介：
 
Catriona (Cate) Sandilands is a professor in the Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University (Toronto). She is a fellow of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, a former Canada Research Chair and past president of both the Association for Literature, Environment and Culture in Canada and the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (US). She is internationally known for her work in the environmental humanities, including The Good-Natured Feminist: Ecofeminism and the Quest for Democracy (University of Minnesota Press, 1999), Queer Ecologies: Sex, Nature, Politics, Desire (Indiana University Press, 2010), and over eighty scholarly and popular articles, essays and stories.


演講摘要：
 
This presentation considers plant/human intimacies as important sites of feminist ecological inquiry. It tells two, connected stories about mulberries, Morus alba and Morus rubra, in Southern Ontario, Canada, and about how controversies surrounding the plants highlight the biopolitical regulation of interspecies intimacy as they intersect with historically-complex human intimacies, as well as showing possibilities for living otherwise. The first story considers mulberry species identity, which is the central axis of an “invasion” drama in which the reduction of the plants to their genomic identities is part of a larger policing of purity that is central to the racist logic of settler colonization that privileges the idea of a stable nature to be defended from change. The second considers the regulation of mulberry sexual expression, which is linked to questions of utility, to a colonial distrust of excess, and to the general impoverishment of multispecies intimacies in cities like Toronto. Thinking about the biopolitical re/organization of moricentric intimacies is a way of taking up possibilities for kinship in a manner that recognizes responsibility for the violences wrought by some institutions of intimacy, and that creates space for ethical kin-makings despite the uncomfortably intimate conditions in which we currently find ourselves in neoliberal capitalism.

主講人簡介：

Tobias Menely is Professor in Department of English at UC Davis. His teaching and research focus on the long eighteenth century, from the Restoration to Romanticism. In his first book, The Animal Claim: Sensibility and the Creaturely Voice (University of Chicago Press, 2015), Dr. Menely links the poetics of sensibility with Enlightenment political theory, humanitarian advocacy, and the debates leading to Britain’s first animal welfare legislation, Martin’s Act of 1822. His co-edited collection, Anthropocene Reading: Literary History in Geologic Times, was published by Pennsylvania State University Press in November 2017. And his new book, Climate and the Making of Worlds: Toward a Geohistorical Poetics, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2021. In this book, Dr. Menely develops a materialist ecocriticism, tracking the imprint of the planetary across a long literary history of poetic rewritings and critical readings in which what is at stake is climate as a condition of human world making.


演講摘要：

What happens when reproductive futurism, with its twinned fantasies of the fertile family and the fertile Earth, exhausts itself, failing to revitalize the symbolic order by promising more of the same? With an eye to the eco-reproductive anxieties of the present, my talk revisits a lineage of stories centering on fraught reproductive agency: Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667),Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), and Butler’s Lilith’s Brood (2000).I focus on decisive scenes in which protagonists negotiate reproductive choice with the aid of fiction-making, acts of speculative projection and apostrophic address that populate the world to come, imbuing procreation with species-level significance. As their protagonists consider the clamoring of future generations, these authors negotiate a blighted inheritance, retelling a creation myth in which a “blessing,” “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth,” is followed by a “curse,” the sexual division of labor. Much as the fertility mandate in Genesis implies the possibility of its contravention, capitalism, in its mode of primitive accumulation, must actively dispossess women of control over procreation, transforming reproductive labor into a “free gift” of nature. The literary expression of what Silvia Federici calls “permanent reproductive crisis,” I argue, is allegory, which appears, in this genealogy, as the hideous progeny generated in the coupling of patriarchal creation myth and feminist science fiction. In allegory’s deferral of meaning—personified in the inscrutability of Milton’s Chaos, Shelley’s creature, and Butler’s Oankali—we detect a secret history of non-reproduction, the possibility of making kin beyond the family and beyond the human.
